When gathering pieces to create your outdoor oasis, outdoor dining sets, an outdoor firepit, a low to the ground coffee table, a portable BBQ, are just some of the few things that spring to mind. And, without realising, one of the most crucial elements of an outdoor space – an outdoor rug – is quietly forgotten.
Lucky for you, we’re here to put a spotlight on, in our opinion, one of the most important pieces within an outdoor setting, a waterproof outdoor rug.
A rug – indoor or outdoor – is a great addition to any space. It can be used to separate spaces within an open plan room, or it’s a great way to add a bit of colour (and protection) to an outdoor setting. And, when it comes to choosing an outdoor rug, there are many factors that come into play such as size, shape and its weather-resistant capabilities.
What makes an outdoor rug waterproof?
At the top of our ‘wants’ when it comes to an outdoor rug is ensuring it is water-resistant or waterproof.
When purchasing an outdoor rug, it’s easy to assume all rugs are waterproof—however, this is not necessarily the case. Some are made to be used during the peak of summer (when rain is less common) and aren’t crafted to withstand a rain shower.
So, when selecting an outdoor rug (especially when the weather in Australia is…moody, to say the least), it’s vital to find one that is waterproof and weather-resistant.
Materials
Starting with the foundation, we’d recommend looking for rugs that are made out of synthetic materials like polypropylene. It’s tempting to opt for an all-natural fibre rug, however, oftentimes these are not as weather-proof as its synthetic counterparts and doesn’t end up lasting very long – costing you more, in the long run.
Polypropylene has moisture-wicking properties and is also fade-resistant – which is great when placed outdoors.
However, if you do prefer choosing an all-natural fibre rug, look for signs that it is breathable. Steer clear from all-natural rugs with backings such as rubber that prevent air from flowing through them easily.
