I found the perfect outdoor dining set for my small garden

It passes the compact backyard test.

When we finished landscaping our outdoor space, I knew I needed a dining set that would enhance – not compete with – the calm, neutral palette we’d chosen: textured stone, soft whites and deep greys.

I wasn’t after anything oversized or fussy, just something modern, fresh, and compact enough to suit our smaller area. I spotted the Freedom ‘Biscay’ outdoor dining set after seeing it in a shoot with MasterChef’s Khanh Ong (he was sharing his ideal dinner party setup), and it stopped me in my tracks.

The tone, the texture, the shape – everything aligned. It had that soft white finish with stone-fleck detail that looks built for modern Australian backyards. I took the plunge, added some white dining chairs for more relaxed seating, and now I use the stools all around the garden. It’s one of the best additions I’ve made to the space.

Freedom ‘Biscay’ round outdoor dining set verdict

  • Our rating: 9/10
  • Why we rated it a 9/10: It has a fresh, modern aesthetic that ties in with natural materials beautifully. It’s compact, practical and versatile enough for smaller spaces, with stools that can double as side tables or garden seating. At $1395 for the table and four stools, I think it offers great value for money.

Pros

  • Beautiful stone-like finish and colour that suits modern outdoor spaces
  • Compact round table ideal for smaller patios or courtyards
  • Versatile stools that can be used throughout the garden

Cons

  • No umbrella hole (something to consider for very sunny areas)
  • Stools don’t have backs, which may not suit longer meals without extra chairs
  • Flat-packing requires a bit of assembly time

Results from our test

From the moment it was set up, the Biscay set felt like a seamless extension of our landscaping. The soft white finish and organic texture blend effortlessly with our stone pavers and rendered garden beds, while the round table encourages a relaxed, conversational vibe. It’s compact enough not to dominate the space but substantial enough to feel generous when entertaining.

The stools are surprisingly sturdy and double as handy side tables when we’re not dining. After a few months of use, I can say it wears well, cleans easily with a damp cloth, and always looks fresh. We often mix in our white outdoor chairs when we want to linger longer over meals – and the combination feels both stylish and functional.

Overall, is the ‘Biscay’ outdoor dining set worth it?

Absolutely – especially if you’re after a piece that blends functionality with design flair. The round table makes the most of tighter spaces, and the tone is spot-on for modern, neutral palettes. It’s not the cheapest set out there, but for the quality of finish and versatility, the price feels justified.

It’s the kind of piece that feels both stylish and timeless – an ideal base to build your outdoor entertaining style around. And because it works just as well with stools as with added chairs, it gives you room to evolve how you use the space over time.
