1. Discover the building’s natural beauty
The contestants went back to basics by stripping out the interior cladding of Jess and Jared’s house to reveal the original brickwork. This authentic surface helped to create an industrial vibe and set the tone for the reno.
2. Bring in a design icon as the centerpiece of a room
House Rules judge Drew Heath is full of praise for the Aether fireplace from Aurora Suspended Fires, chosen by Leigh and Kristie for Jess and Jared’s living area. “That is a design icon,” he says. “That is just one of those things that will always be a classic. It’s timeless; it’s got beautiful shape.”
3. Match the grout to the tiles
In the main bathroom Mel and Dave went with a modern take on warehouse style. They used dark grout with Dimensions porcelain tiles in Black Oxide, from Beaumont Tiles to create a dramatic, unbroken feature wall as a backdrop for the Eden Freestanding bath from Highgrove Bathrooms.
4. Recycle found materials
The kitchen island bench was constructed using reused timber from Jess and Jared’s shed, thus adding to the sense of history in the house, while still keeping practicality in mind. Matched with vintage-style pendant lights, it becomes the centrepiece of the new dining and kitchen space.
5. With artworks, go big or go home
There was controversy during the first renovation when two teams chose the same artwork in different areas, but all judges agreed that the larger sized art chosen for the living area worked best. When you have an image this strong, it’s best to go all out and make it a talking point.
