The judges’ verdicts are in and, whilst some are producing beautiful rooms, many of the teams still have a lot to learn about interior design and decoration.

House Rules is well underway with Jess and Jared’s entire Adelaide home undergoing a renovation this week.

Rooms were broken up into zones once again and some teams delivered better than others in the style stakes. The House Rules, whilst seemingly easy to apply to the renovation process, were the undoing of some teams where they missed the mark.

 Jess & Jared’s rules:

1. Bring New York to the burbs with warehouse style

2. Colour with dark greens and pale pinks

3. Find iconic B&W photography

4. Do something different with feature walls in every room

5. Flow timber and brick throughout

VIC team Leigh and Kristie’s living room certainly had the “Wow!” factor with the ‘Aether’ suspended fireplace ($9360, Aurora) ticking boxes of NY warehouse, statement piece and to flow timber and brick into the space. The positioning of the timber beams overhead was controversial but the intention impressed the judges.

Leigh and Kristie’s execution of the all-black walk-in-wardrobe however left the judges in the dark (literally) with LLB saying it was like “being in Darth Vader’s helmet.” Wendy was disappointed about the lack of “an invitation into the home” for Jess.

In the dining room, Toad and Mandy’s styling left a little to be desired – their “faux and fake” overhead beam upsetting Drew, who accused the couple of not treating their recycled materials with “respect.”

It was their green-tiled bathroom that received nods of approval from all three judges in the end. Their use of mixed materials of white subway and glossy olive green wall tiles, together with brick floor tiles in a herringbone design impressed all three judges and saved them – they came out on top of the leaderboard with 17 out of 30 points for their zone.

QLD team Mel and Dave thought they were onto a winner with their main bathroom and guest bedroom, but depite the hard-won enormous space to use, low-positioning of the shower and a bathroom layout that didn’t take full advantage of the size of were a miss. Their feature wall in the bedroom, made from recycled timbers was compared to that of an “outside dunny” by Laurence and their score left them tied at the bottom of the leaderboard.

In Kim and Michelle’s pink beauty room, the NSW mother and daughter duo proudly displayed their pendant light statement piece, which had won them professional painters for the week. Their back-lit large black & white photo of Audrey Hepburn impressed for hitting the rules of iconic, New York and black & white were spot on, with an additional nod to beauty.

“This is absolutely perfect for a beauty room.”

The judges were blushing with pride but the love affair soon ended, with Wendy failing to see any practicality in the room – importantly that Jess’s customers couldn’t see themselves from the beauty chair: “I don’t think Jess is going to get what she needs out of this room.”

In the laundry Wendy thought more was needed.

QLD brothers Josh and Brandon managed to scrape into third place with 15 points, despite their movie-themed bonus room going horribly wrong with King Kong wallpaper and the missed opportunity to display Jared’s sporting memorabilia on the walls. According to LLB, the man-cave-esque room was uninviting to Jess and like “being in Donald Trump’s head.”

In the kitchen they fared better with their choice of grey cabinetry encouraged but Wendy would have liked to see a darker tone. The palette feature above the island bench was universally disliked.

Kiara and David’s feature bedhead and bedroom styling got the thumbs up from Drew, but their painting of only half of the hallway Wendy called “criminal and “just wrong”. “I’ve seen it before,” she said, “And I don’t want to see it again.”

We have still to see Jess and Jared’s reaction to their home, airing tonight on Channel 7 at 7:30pm.
