Home inspiration: Oasis of calm

Made for relaxing, the living room is a favourite for homeowners. Here, the B&B Italia ‘Charles’ modular sofa from Space, which is topped with turquoise ‘Stoney Surf’ cushions by Cloth is a regular spot used to relax and unwind. A striped rug from Cadrys and ‘Metropolitan’ armchair from Space.

The spacious galley kitchen boasts iconic Fritz Hansen ‘Series 7’ barstools and a generous, quartz stone workbench. “We eat breakfast on it and it’s great for entertaining! We use the whole length of it to serve salads and drinks” says homeowner. Transparent Kartell pendant lights, available from Space, provide a modern counterpoint.

Warm rock-maple timber cabinets line the smart space and satisfy the couple’s desires for plentiful storage. Installed by North Shore Custom Cabinetmaking, the joinery also has an added bonus: “Built-in furniture is very easy to clean,” explains homeowners. A contemporary oval-shaped table (try Great Dane Furniture) and Fritz Hansen chairs from Corporate Culture are teamed with a grass-green hemp rug from Cadrys. Delicate blue porcelain pieces by Amore Lita Designs lend a graceful touch.

Previously the daughter’s room, it has now become a guest bedroom with a sleek and slightly more masculine feel. Inky blues and greys abound, with a butler’s tray from Redd Leather, accessories from Taste Living and Salt & Pepper, and an ocean-inspired artwork by Wall Candy Art and Paint. To amp up the comfort factor, they chose a dark quilted Sheridan coverlet and spotty armchair. The deep blue circle painting is by Fiona Goss.

At the suggestion of interior designer Fiona Goss, homeowners chose cool, calming blues and aquas as the dominant colour scheme. “I couldn’t live with red in my house,” they remark. “I like lots of colour but nothing too jarring.” We’re coveting the Freedom ‘Trellis’ throw in Seafoam and mirrored side tables from Tantra Mirrors. The oceanic theme continues with plump cushions from Laura Ashley.
