2016 was a standout year for Australian interiors. A time when homes felt more personal, textures were layered with confidence and thoughtful design took centre stage. From home-grown designers to memorable home tours and spaces that set new benchmarks, it was a year rich with inspiration.
We’ve gathered together the moments that resonated most with you. Think spaces that balanced beauty with practicality, embraced natural materials and reflected a growing desire for warmth, authenticity and individuality. Take a look back and rediscover the homes and ideas that defined the year.
Byron bliss
This Byron Bay beauty from our February issue was a house to remember – and shot by one of our favourite photographers too!
Jonathen Adler
The team caught up with design superstar Jonathan Adler this year (whose work is exclusively stocked at Coco Republic) and LOVED hearing about everything from his rescue dog, Foxylady, to his favourite pieces. Read the full story below.
Dream state
The layered textures and calming hues of this gorgeous, Nordic nest graced the cover of our June 2016 issue.
Trend to watch
In smoky greys, blues and even some sage green, the JAPANDI trend emerged this year. We think we’ll be seeing a lot more of the Japanese-meets-Scandinavian design in 2017.
The Bee’s knees
Melbourne-based Beeline Design first caught our eye in the midst of the copper craze, when furniture maker Adam Brislin and partner Lucy Grant embellished their ‘Calypso’ timber stool with a fabulous glint of the rosy metal. The recent release of the firm’s ‘Cuba’ collection sees a sophisticated new direction, working with Tasmanian oak and leather to create an entire range that showcases craftsmanship. Poppy the potter
We’re big fans of Poppy Lane and Scott Gibson, aka Pop & Scott, here at HB. Individually creative (potter Poppy trained as a florist and Scott is a former plumber-turned- furniture maker), they started out selling Poppy’s pretty pots and designing and making furniture for themselves. Now, they have a showroom/studio in a former warehouse in Northcote, Vic, and recently opened a new store in Byron Bay, NSW.
Fabric fantasy
If we’re talking texture, 2016 was all about velvet. This high-end trend has travelled to the mid-market in record speed. Why? Because it’s just so gorgeous. The lustrous quality ignites saturated colour and the natural silk fibres bring the elegance. This Roar + Rabbit ‘Swivel’ chair in Dusty Blush can be found at westelm.com.au
Grace Wood
Wool artist Grace Wood’s cushions, throws and wall hangings were a BIG hit in the HB office. You can read the Style Insight story below.
Patrizia Moroso
The art director of Italian furniture company Moroso is renowned for collaborating with the world’s best emerging talent. During her visit to Australia, we spoke to the design doyenne about the brand and her top moments of 2016.
The home of Kylie Gilles
After taking some inspiration from Doctor Dreamy of Grey’s Antatomy, the home of The Morning Show co-host Kylie Gillies was a dream of its own. Click below to see it for yourself.
Sweet celebrations
We can’t go past this chocolate cake with whiskey caramel sauce – we even tried this one out in the office.
Living colour
The sabre ficus was to 2016 what the fiddle leaf fig was to 2015 – and isn’t it divine?
The Butcher’s Daughter
Bridget Ditte founded catering and floristry business Butchers Daughter in July 2016, and has been making people’s dreams come true ever since.
Bar cart comeback
Serving up summer drinks will be a whole lot easier thanks to the return of these trusty trollies – as practical as they are pretty! Shop our favourites below.
My island home
Who doesn’t love a little touch of holiday style in their own home? This interiors feature from February was all about creating a relaxed, well-travelled look.
Bathe in beauty
This shot from our September outdoor feature had us wishing we could soak away our worries in this very tub!
