House 11 was created for a family of five in Sydney’s Hills District. In a moment made for reality TV, owners Aimee and Vahan handed over the keys, their cash and complete creative control, and didn’t return again until the paint was dry, seven months later.
“They are a gorgeous family we had known for some time,” says Bonnie. “They basically told us to go hell for leather.”
And that’s exactly what the design trio did. The family and the bones of the house leant themselves to a youthful reinterpretation of Hamptons style, pairing classic detailing with quirky touches. As Bonnie explains, “I love the contradiction of something unexpected.”
In the formal lounge area that design identity translates to comfy rolled arm lounges, armchairs and a round coffee table from Freedom.
In a move straight out of the Hamptons playbook, the Three Birds team added a daybed along the window and timber wall mouldings from Intrim.
A large-scale Dani Cross print ‘Snakes and Ladders’ shakes up the mood. “We wanted to play with tradition,” says Bonnie. “The artwork is the biggest feature of that room and feels unexpected, which I love.”
To the left of the entry, through Luxaflex bifold shutter-doors, you find a “gorgeously old fashioned” study. Venture further into the house and a barn door slides to reveal the combined laundry/powder room complete with traditional chrome Reece tapware, a pendant from Beacon Lighting and Florence Broadhurst wallpaper from Materialised.
“It needed to be beautiful for guests to use and functional for the homeowners as they do their laundry,” says Bonnie. “Even the Electrolux washer and dryer have a hint of Hamptons about them with the navy accent colour.”
