Luscious laundry revamp

Proof positive that even functional rooms can be fabulous!
Sue Stubbs

This cramped, gloomy and unloved 1980s laundry (below, left) had no benchtop; clean shirts had to be hung on the door frame and a cheap wall cupboard comprised the only storage. The room was crying out for a complete revamp. Interior architect Sally Rhys-Jones took on the challenge, transforming the compact zone into a contemporary laundry that is stylish, practical and modern.

By using a galley layout, under-bench Miele appliances and custom-built cupboards constructed by Captive Cabinetmaking – using Laminex with ‘Flint’ finish in Moleskin – Sally has created a streamlined and flowing space. Soothing stone hues and a neutral colour palette, which includes tastefully packaged laundry products by Murchison-Hume, create a relaxed and calming feel, making washday a pleasure.

An undermount Afa ‘Flow’ sink and Phoenix ‘Cruise’ 220 square mixer, both from Reece, are practical must-haves (left). The benchtop, made from 20mm Caesarstone in Linen from Central Coast Granite, picks up the tones of the beautiful polished marble mosaic tiles in Stone Blend from Tilesmart (centre); a small area is a great opportunity to push the budget and create impact with a standout finish like this. One of the major changes Sally suggested was fitting this floor-to-ceiling storage cupboard, covering an existing window (right). “As the window looked out onto a brick wall, the extra storage gained was worth the sacrifice,” explains Sally.
