Transforming an outdated ensuite into a modern, light-filled retreat was the aim for this lavish makeover in Melbourne’s Bayside area. Part of a larger renovation, the owners wanted to enhance their home’s Edwardian features, while injecting a dash of contemporary indulgence, especially in the ensuite. “They dreamt of creating an oasis with ample natural light, soft textures and luxurious finishes,” says designer Georgette Criticos of GIA Renovations, who reimagined the space.
The original ensuite was functional, but out of sync with the homeowners’ vision for their space. “It was all cream and brown tones, a very ’90s-style renovation,” says Georgette. “They wanted to move away from a stock standard style of bathroom and make it something special.”

Georgette first focused on optimising the layout, prioritising natural light and free-flowing movement. She shifted the double vanity towards the entrance and grouped the bath and shower together on the far wall to create a wet zone. Taking advantage of the high ceilings, she specified a rain shower and floor-to-ceiling glass shower screen for a streamlined finish.
“The tiles were an important choice, as they formed the base of the palette,” shares Georgette.
Honed ‘Empire’ tiles in White were laid on the floor, with matte ‘Pottery Field’ tiles in Pearl on the walls, both from Southern Tile. “They are a neutral, creamy white tone, giving the walls a textural element,” says Georgette of the large-format design.
Designer’s tip

The timber window was replaced with a white aluminium framed design to withstand moisture, and a skylight was installed directly above the angled bath, ushering in light and vignettes that the homeowners can now enjoy while soaking in the tub. “The skylight creates beautiful, ever-changing reflections on each surface,” says Georgette.

Achieving a cohesive design and ambience can often be as simple as selecting fixtures and fittings from the same range, and that’s exactly what Georgette did when designing this ensuite.
The curvaceous basins and bath are from the Kado ‘Lussi’ collection at Reece, while the tapware and hardware from ABI Interiors share a Brushed Brass finish.
In the details
Turning her attention to the colour palette, she pursued an airy, spa-like aesthetic with her careful material selections. These finishing flourishes include matching tapware in brushed brass for warmth, a soft terrazzo vanity top for tonal depth and V-groove cabinetry for tactile interest.
