Modern monochrome kitchen

A slick space that is as happy catering for two as it is for ten

For this spacious modern kitchen, designer Sarah Gavan of Point 2 Design took on the challenge of creating a space that combines elegance and practicality, all with a relaxed edge. The kingpin is a bespoke Mark Tuckey table on castors which can be easily moved next to the kitchen bench to make a super-sized surface, or if the dining crowd grows it can extend to seat 10 comfortably. The kitchen is graphic and modern, yet with a natural palette and timber accents that give it an inviting feel.

The custom-made Mark Tuckey table is made from limed American oak boards and a stainless-steel frame. It’s paired with Takahashi Asako ‘170’ dining chairs from Curious Grace that match the dark wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. The trio of TossB ‘Sphere’ pendants from Hub were chosen for their small profile, while European oak floorboards from Precision Flooring are just the right warm, neutral background to the stronger tones that feature in the rest of the scheme.

Pristine palette

Timber veneer cabinetry in Smoked Ash from New Age Veneers adds a textural accent to the predominantly monochrome scheme which includes cabinetry in Dulux Lexicon Quarter 2-pac and crisp Alpine White Quantum Quartz on the island benchtop and waterfall end. The washing-up area continues the metallic accents, with a Gessi Oxygene pull-out mixer, a Zip Hydrotap that delivers boiling or chilled water at the touch of a button and two Franke ‘Kubus’ undermount sinks. A Miele side-by-side fridge-freezer is fully integrated, contributing to the kitchen’s streamlined finish.

Storage central

Practical and functional details make all the difference in a well-planned kitchen. The drawers were specifically tailored to the owners’ cooking equipment: shallow for cutlery and spices, medium for utensils and deep for pans and baking trays. There’s also an appliance cupboard (right), fitted at the end of the bench, tucked behind mini bi-fold doors.

Steel surprise

Marine-grade stainless steel creates a striking splashback and chimes with the steel trim around the barely there Miele induction cooktop (left). Above the cooktop is a built-in Miele rangehood, tucked away in a classic form-meets-function solution.
