Period features and a touch of the English countryside combine to create a dream kitchen.
Cabinet meeting
Panelled cupboards and an island, painted in quarter-strength Porter’s Paints Nettle by The Classic Outfitter, offer a taste of the English countryside in this kitchen. Their detailed profile echoes the style of the ’20s home, and as it’s all handpainted, the colour can be changed at any time.
Surface story
Elaborate Sanderson ‘Sweet Bay’ wallpaper from The Classic Outfitter directs a spring-like palette, while high ceilings and natural light also help to shape the English conservatory feel. The old kitchen floor tiles were replaced to reveal original tallowwood flooring which was re-stained with a dark mix of Feast Watson in Black Japan and Walnut and matches the flooring throughout the home.
Perfectly useful
For sensibility’s sake, homeowner Jane opted for Smartstone Carrara for the benchtops. It still offers the classic aesthetic of authentic marble, but with none of the worry of staining and scratching. A pot filler fitted to the splashback above a Belling ‘Richmond’ 110cm freestanding dual fuel range cooker also serves the cause of functionality, while marble-mosaic subway tiles are just right for a period kitchen. The bevelled edges and the mix of sizes create interest without competing too much with the bold wallpaper.
Classic touch
Achieving an elegant kitchen is all in the details. Classic fixtures are an investment and stand the test of time, but you can still have some fun with painting, wallpaper and decorative items that uplift you. These can always be updated over the years.
