Perhaps we don’t talk about it, perhaps it’s inherent, but a home shared with a dog as part of the family has a different feeling to it. These furry friends seem to imbue a household with a warmth that is both celebrated and shared.
Almost every HB home features a dog we fall in love with. We’ve found a like-minded friend in Nicole England, whose new book, Resident Dog, introduces some of Australia’s finest homes and their adorable pooches
Nicole England is a Melbourne-based interiors and architecture photographer who discovered that the shoots she enjoyed most were the ones where dogs were present.
Here’s a taste of the new four-legged friends she found in her travels – and their fabulous homes.
1. Stewey
A glass-wrapped, lightfilled home – by Austin Maynard Architects – in Melbourne’s Northcote is the home of French bulldog Stewey. Designed to allow the family to be together without being in each other’s pockets, it’s the perfect roaming ground for Stewey, described as “sweet, very loving and extremely cheeky”.
2. Skipper
This contemporary Sydney residence, designed by Handelsmann + Khaw, has chic industrial undertones and is the home of Skipper the border collie. “The family joke is that with his black-and-white coat, Skipper suits the home’s monochromatic palette,” says Nicole.
3. Cookie
The grassed area out back of this home in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley – designed by Cavill Architects – is a favourite with Cookie the labradoodle. “Sometimes she likes to sit in the rooftop garden and take in the cityscape,” writes Nicole.
4. Eric
Yorkshire terrier Eric in the main bedroom of his digs, an SJB-designed penthouse apartment in Redfern, Sydney. He sleeps in a custom ‘mouse hole’ in the bed base.
5. Bergie
A 19th-century terrace in East Melbourne – with a modern revamp by Hecker Guthrie – is home to bull mastiff/kelpie cross Bergie. The ex-farm dog “seems more than happy to have ended up with this comfortable city life,” adds Nicole.
Nicole’s book Resident Dog: Incredible Homes And The Dogs That Live There (Thames & Hudson, $75), is available at all good booksellers.
