Gorgi Coghlan knows a thing or two about surprises. The Project co-host recently made waves on TV’s popular reality show The Masked Singer, when she whipped off her mask to reveal that she was in fact the lovable ‘Monster’ character.
Few people knew that the TV personality is actually a classically trained singer and accomplished stage and screen performer. Not to mention that she used to be a high-school science teacher and state-level equestrian competitor. And now the talented mother-of-one can add hotelier and restaurateur to her multi-feathered cap, with the opening of Ballarat’s luxury The Provincial Hotel and Lola restaurant.
Launching in November 2018, the boutique hotel and restaurant was recently listed in the 52 Weekends Away in the Good Weekend, as well as the Top 100 Most Delicious Restaurants in Victoria. Adding to the growing list of accolades, The Provincial also took out the Tourism Accommodation Award for Best Boutique Style Hotel in Victoria.
When Gorgi and her husband Simon stumbled across the National Trust-listed landmark, which was built in 1909, they decided to give the hotel and restaurant a luxurious makeover.
“The luxury market is growing,” says Gorgi. “Simon and I saw an opportunity to grow that market in Ballarat through boutique accommodation and an adjoining restaurant offering fantastic quality food and wine.”
Comprising 23 individually-style suites, the boutique accommodation combines bespoke modern pieces with antique finds. Inspired by high-end New York and Australian hotels, Gorgi and her team of interior designers sourced fabrics and unique pieces to create a warm and indulgent environment.
“When staying at a hotel, most travellers look for more than just a bed to sleep in,” Gorgi explains. “Increasingly, fantastic service, attention to detail in a competent and relaxed manner, and of course a comfortable bed, create an intimate hotel experience. The Provincial Hotel and Lola restaurant have been designed to exceed expectations.”
Lola restaurant, named after one the Goldfields’ legendary dancers, actresses and courtesans – Lola Montez – offers a locally sourced, seasonally driven menu with a European influence, devised by head chef Philippe Desrettes.
