A former estate belonging to the late Hollywood actress Bette Davis has hit the market. The seven-acre estate is located in the charming Maine town of Cape Elizabeth and boasts uninterrupted views of the Atlantic ocean. Davis, who is known for her roles in Death on the Nile, Now,Voyager, All About Eve, lived at the property with her then-husband, actor Gary Merrill in the 1950s. The couple nicknamed the main house “Witch Way” and spent many happy summers there with their children. According to Architectural Digest, Merill caught lobsters off the backyard and hosted hockey games with his “Merrill Marauders” team.
The 7,600 square foot main house is a charming shingle style home that’s typical of the area. The home’s idyllic covered porches and bluestone terrace make the most of the water frontage while the interiors also boast beautiful ocean views through large picture windows. Inside, there’s five bedrooms and six bedrooms, as well as multiple living spaces, a large open-plan kitchen and dining space and a seperate guest cottage. While the home is grand, it’s coastal interiors retain that laid-back charm that Maine is known for.
Davis and Merill sold the home after their divorce in 1960 but Merill later said that some of the best days of his life were spent at the property. It’s currently listed for US$15 million (AU$23 million) with Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty, with the current asking price making it the second most expensive listing in Maine right now. While this may be a little out of our price range, we’re content to take a tour and satisfy ourselves with the immortal words of the woman herself in her 1942 film Now Voyager, “Don’t let’s ask for the moon, we have the stars.”
