3 ways to introduce winter tones into your home

We draw inspiration from the Dulux 2022 Colour Forecast Restore Palette.

Silver grey skies, tan bare branches, the lilac haze of lavender shrubs and coffee on a chilly morning; the colours of winter are all about neutral, soft tones and a connection to nature so why not reflect the season and bring this restorative palette into your home?

Using the Restore Palette from the Dulux 2022 Colour Forecast range, we created a tranquil bedroom space befitting cosy nights and golden winter light.

The room consists of gentle, earth-based neutrals alongside more rugged, natural colours. Think buttercream, pumice, deep blue, clay, rich forest green, moss and charcoal-purple. Here we speak to Dulux colour forecaster and stylist Bree Leech about creating this winter-ready scheme at home.

1. CHOOSE A BEAUTIFUL BASE

Select a soft and soothing base colour to build a cohesive winter palette, such as a subtle grey. Monochromatic colours like this induce relaxing surrounds and set a starting point to build the mood for the rest of the space, using furniture, textiles and decor.

“To make colour selection easy, start with a palette of colours that have been expertly assembled to work together in harmony,” says Bree. “You can then get creative with your combination knowing the colours will complement each other.”

Colour pick: Fall in love with Dulux Tranquil Retreat, a light grey that brings depth and sophistication with just the right layers of warmth.

2. GET BOLD WITH COLOUR

Bringing colour into your space can have powerful effects both in terms of mood and ambience. “Using a colour like plum in a bedroom creates an instant cocooning effect,” says Bree. “A shade of aubergine is a receding colour which allows you to be bold without overpowering your room.”

Where to decorate with aubergine? Choose rooms which require peace or focus, such as a bedroom or study. To accentuate this shade, style it with natural fibres and materials such as raw timber, textured fabrics, linen and stone.

“To decorate with this palette, I like to layer with soft textures in the same calming tone to emphasise the restorative effect. Then, for small punctuations, bring in complementary colours such as soft wheat, pared back neutrals or pale grey accents,” adds Bree.

Colour pick: Dulux Oboe D’Amore is a deep and muted aubergine with a rich and decadent base. It has the right depth to make a statement without being overwhelming. Use in a dark room for mood or in a lighter room for a splash of plummy goodness.

3. CONNECT WITH NATURE

Colour is a great way to express yourself and your style, and Bree recommends a few key steps before you finalise your colours.

“Always trial your colours with sample pots and test in different areas at different times of the day. Don’t be afraid to use colour on door trims and windows, either. It’s an easy way to bring a new depth to your room,” she advises.

A gorgeous accent shade for winter is nature-inspired terracotta. Ideal for a bedroom, it has a grounding effect on interiors. This earthy hue pairs well with natural materials such as a woven bedhead, timber flooring and stone tables.

Colour pick: Tap into earthy inspiration with a warm terracotta with soft pink undertones, such as Dulux New Penny.
