Opening its doors in Sydney this week is the Observatory Bar at The Langham – a sophisticated space where you will discover an inventive cocktail and inspiring food menu, but we can’t take our eyes off the décor.
Located in the heart of Millers Point, this intimate bar provides an elegant escape from the bustling city. Known worldwide for their attention to detail in their food and beverage, the space has been, “Designed for guests seeking an elevated cocktail or fine wine experience.”
The room is entered off the main lobby in The Langham and forms an inviting picture with plush upholstered couches showing gently curving dark timber legs and drawn into conversation clutches with classically elegant tub chairs in golden brushed velvet. Slim-line, straight-backed teal velvet seats and tidy little mushroom ottomans surround and surfaces finished with the quiet luxury of marble and brass.
Not the marble and brass we’re seeing everywhere but executed with handmade detailing in timeless shapes on generous round split-level tables – crafted with care and a contemporary edge that is just a little more than fabulous. Back-lit shelving and bar trolleys pepper the space – all conspiring to make it feel like home and that’s all the invitation we need to take mental notes on what decorating ideas we’ll appropriate for our own spaces.
Bar manager, David Green has been charged with populating the cocktail menu with unique flavours that take in Australian native flora and aromatics to thrill the senses. Executive Chef Dave Whitting has created a menu offering a delicious selection of dishes featuring fresh local produce and inviting flavours, all designed to share.
“The Langham hotels are known for our world famous bars like the award-winning Artesian at The Langham, London. I am proud to present the Observatory Bar, introducing the most evocative cocktails in Sydney curated by our celebrated mixologist, David Green,” says General Manager Gaylord Lamy.
The bar also stocks one of the city’s largest collections of gins, whiskey and an extensive list of wines. “At Observatory Bar, I wanted to create an exclusive menu and experience that offers our guests the chance to try hard-to-find spirits, rare whiskies and gins, without having to leave Sydney,” says Green.
Recommended at the bar:
Green Ant Martini (Australian Green Ant Gin, Salt Bush, Lemon Myrtle aromatics and Green Ants)
Neap Tide (homemade finger lime sugar syrup, Ironbark distillery wattleseed gin, a splash of Australian sparkling wine, paperbark smoke, a garnish of Sydney rock oyster, fresh finger lime and violet) which includes some of Australia’s most unique flora and fauna such as sea asparagus and paperbark smoke.
