Whilst you may be familiar with the colourful portfolio of fabric creations by Cath Derksema under her Prints Charming moniker, her newest venture has created an inspiring meeting place for like-minded creatives.
Swing open the front door and step onto restored, black-stained floorboards leading into Sydney’s newest creative space, The Happen Store. The brainchild of creative powerhouse Cath Derksema, best known for over 20 years of blazing a bright trail in textile design, this revitalised space welcomes newcomers and embraces a collective who can’t resist but to return time and again to craft and collaborate.
With a background in printing fabric and designing fabrics since John Kaldor in the 1980s, Cath is at the forefront of fabric design and has a wealth of knowledge to impart. Hungry to share and collaborate, The Happen Store is the manifestation of her desire to bring together others to create and make.
Artworks, garments and fabrics from makers who use the space are all on sale here.
Makers come from far and wide to use the workshop and communal tables – either on a Wednesday morning casual drop-in basis or for the regular Tuesday night craft sessions. Some attend workshops held in the space by an A-list cast of Australian creatives, plucked from Cath’s little black book of established artists. Others run a business from the shared studio spaces at the rear and sell their wares in the store.
