Though we may not realise it, the humble ottoman — like the kitchen island bench — is where many of us end up spending Christmas Eve and Christmas morning.
Perched on a plush sofa or cross-legged on a cosy rug, the ottoman is where we often gather, to watch ‘Love Actually’ for the zillionth time, wrap presents (and unwrap them) and entertain family and friends during the festive season.
So, it makes sense to give this space as much decorative attention as you would the finest of tablescapes. Here, we’ve captured different ways to style your ottoman according to the mood and moment.

How to style a festive ottoman
Wondering how to style your ottoman? The first step is to identify and complement both your living room decor and your festive theme.
Are you a fan of classic Hamptons sophistication? Is a traditional, wintry tartan aesthetic your jam? Perhaps contemporary, nature-inspired Australian style floats your boat.
Make sure you include practicalities, but don’t forget some festive flourishes at the end. The key to successfully styling an ottoman is all in the layering.

Begin with a tactile rug that either blends with the tones in the ottoman or provides a contrast.
It’s important to choose the right ottoman for the space, whether that is a small round one for a compact corner or one in a bold hue for an area that needs a pop of colour.

Place a tray off centre on the ottoman to act as a base for your items — a mirrored or timber tray works well. It’s best to put any vase with flowers on your tray as this provides a stable, flat surface.
You can also use bowls, baskets, platters, serving boards and plates to display smaller items.

Include coffee table books with covers that go with your theme. Cordless lamps are useful as you don’t need a powerpoint nearby.
Add a bowl full of baubles, your favourite festive treats and maybe a gift or two along with the always essential glass of bubbles.
