Pantone has released their colour of the Year for 2018 and you might be surprised at the direction it takes us.
Straight into outer space.
The result of Pantone’s work year-round on the strategic direction of colour in the international world of design, gives us PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet.
The blue-based purple is reminiscent of the night sky and continues the theme of counterculture and pushes colour boundaries with the mystical, spiritual qualities. It evokes imagery of royal velvet robes and the late pop king, Prince, for who Pantone named a colour earlier this year after he passed away in April 2016.
“The Pantone Colour of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” says Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute.
“From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come”
Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director, Pantone Colour Institute
“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet” Leatrice Eiseman Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute
How to use it in the home?
“To keep the look contemporary,” says HB senior stylist, Rachel Peters, “Embrace metallics as part of the textural palette and pair it with other celestial hues, such as navy and shimmery, opalescent jewel colours.”
