There’s one phrase I keep coming back to when I look at how we’re decorating in 2026: The whimsical era has arrived. After years of hyper-productive living, ruthless efficiency and pressure to optimise every corner of our day, we’ve collectively hit a point where we’re drawing a line in the sand. Home is now where we play.
Lately, I’ve been describing it as a kind of childlike adoration of our spaces – that sense of delight, wonder and intimacy with an environment that feels like it takes care of you. Whimsical interiors are thoughtful and emotionally warm. They hold you, whether you want to be productive or still.
This shift lands when decorative ornamentation is primed for a comeback – purely expressive details that exist for joy. It feels impossible not to talk about social media here, because that’s where we’re spending huge chunks of our consciousness. We’ve all seen the rise of that copy-paste “timeless” Pinterest aesthetic. Ironically, it’s now timestamped itself. We’re exhausted by mass production and sameness. We want spaces that feel truly ours – one-of-a-kind, human, handmade, money-can’t-buy. That’s the heart of the whimsical era.
This is interior design as a form of storytelling – where every detail carries intention. Ornamentation exists purely for delight, character and expression. And it’s a declaration that our homes are our personal worlds – places where we can soften, slow down, disconnect and return to ourselves.
We’ve been paving the way for this moment for years. First came the decorative wall finishes – the French washes, frescoes and Venetian plasters. Then wallpaper swept back in with full force, wrapping our rooms in pattern, nostalgia and atmosphere. Whimsy is simply the next, bolder iteration of that same instinct: a move toward spaces shaped by human hands, rich with texture, story and soul.
Defining details of the whimsical era
Three key features of the whimsical era to make your home feel deeply delighted in.
1. Signs of human life
Handpainted murals, artisan details, tile mosaics and verdure tapestries signal the new luxury: human intervention. Imperfection is to be celebrated and stencilling quietly re-enters the chat. We’re craving spaces that feel made by real people, with real hands, telling real stories.

2. Fleeting romance
With more of us renting for longer, whimsy shows up in pattern-packed sofas, decorative room dividers, expressive bedding and abundant, personal curation. These pieces let a rental feel like a forever home, without leaving any permanent marks.

3. Purely decorative
Cornices, mouldings, architraves, window framing – decorative details are back and they serve no function beyond delight, which is exactly the point. In the whimsical era, design priorities are personal and joy-driven.
