How to get better lighting in your bedroom

Can't see to read?
Jody D'arcy

Adequate lighting in the bedroom is often overlooked, in favour of other major decorating decisions such as bedhead, wardrobe and soft furnishings. Once you’re finally at rest with your renovation however, can you see what you’re doing in bed?

There are plenty of options to consider with task lighting at the bedside, all of which make reading, working and eating breakfast in bed more manageable.

1. Table lamp

A great option for renters or those not wishing to make any electrical adjustments, the perfect bedside lamp can not only brighten your page, but your decorating scheme. A touch of metallic, a shade upholstered to match your bedlinen or an heirloom piece will all add a touch of décor delight.

2. Pendant lighting

We’ve certainly cottoned on to these for task lighting in the kitchen and dining areas, but have you considered the merits of a pendant suspended over each bedside table for a subtle overhead glow? Depending on your ceiling access, this is usually a simple job for an electrician; add a dimmer and you can adjust the mood to suit.

3. Wall sconces

Enjoying a resurgence in all parts of the home, a wall sconce needs an electrician to install the wiring before the walls are finished and painted, so ideally need to be planned ahead or installed as part of a larger makeover. There are more coming on the market all the time and styles range from delicate fabric shades through brass, porcelain and glass. Tip: measure carefully before installation – for best results position in relation to the bedhead and outside of the immediate bed area.
