The choice of whether to decorate for the long term or throw everything you have at one grand scheme that will suit your child’s current age, it’s entirely up to you.

Each of these rooms has a key design factor that informs all of the other decorative elements at play, so even when you’re on a tight budget you can make the most of what you have available.

If it’s time for a kids’ bedroom makeover in your house but you’re not sure where to start, take inspiration from this bunch of brilliant bedrooms.

1. Wallpaper

Investing in a feature wall of stunning wallpaper like this Ximena Escobar ‘Friday’ mural will set the palette for the room to follow. Pick up colours from both the soft pinks through to the darkest crimson-browns and add a touch of green for good measure. A sophisticated design that will grow with the child once the little wrought iron bed is outgrown – this pattern would work extremely well with paired-back timbers and deep velvet upholstery.

2. Upholstered bedhead

The strong pink colour of the Quadrille China Seas ‘Lyford Background’ fabric is picked up elsewhere in the room against a crisp white wall colour to keep things calm between pops of pink. Texture is added with a rug and tufted upholstered chair, beneath clever use of a wall-mounted bookshelf for display – kept handy to the bed.

Using the colour yellow consistently through bedlinens, light fittings and mobile mean the vintage map – an inexpensive find at Typo is brought seamlessly into the decorating scheme as part of the mix.

4. Map mural

Maps are a great way to decorate and educate at the same time and this wall treatment is an economical way to tick both boxes. Created using actual maps and featured behind bookshelves, it’s an economical alternative to a full-wall mural.

5. Be bold with colour

Using colour on the walls needn’t be scary – get your child’s input on their choice of colour (seen here is ‘Sherwood Green’ from Resene) and paint just one wall, or a recess – perhaps next to a fireplace. As tastes change it’s easier to paint over just one section, rather than the whole room.
