Inspirational artists that celebrate International Women’s Day

“There is nothing like squeezing fresh paint onto the palette and imagining the possibilities that await” ~ Hannah Fox

Art has always been a passion for Hannah, and prompted her to complete a Fine Arts degree at Monash University and work in galleries. Yet for many years, painting was just a hobby that took a back seat to a corporate career as a graphic designer. In 2008 while designing an exhibition catalogue for an art gallery she realised she would much rather paint pieces for the catalogue than produce it. And she has never looked back. A spirit of freedom and adventure infuse the creations of woodwork artist Elise Cameron-Smith. Best known for her miniature boats, the 25-year-old avoids designing by computer or calculation, preferring instead to create by hand and eye. “Most of my work is kind of spontaneous,” says Elise.

At heart Harriet is still the girl who loves to collect fruit-tree prunings, the wonderful, dangling flower heads of palm trees, seagrass and anything else she comes across. The only real difference is that she now has the skills to turn nature’s discards and cast-offs into collectable homewares and art. “I love what I do,” says Harriet, “and I love helping people tap into a creativity they didn’t even know was there.

We chat to stylist, author, interior designer and collector, Sibella Court who, after 10 years in New York City, landed in Sydney’s Paddington and started the first retail experience, The Society Inc. Today, her ‘imaginarium’ is based in Sydney’s St Peters, where she has expanded into an enviable post-industrial warehouse, combining all of her talents to produce a destination full of wonder and creativity.
