In this beach house on the New South Wales central coast, a master-bedroom nestled in the trees was refreshed with a pared-back sophisticated palette. The inspiration for homeowner Saul was to create a relaxed vibe and sense of escape. Here’s how to create your very own tranquil retreat layered with gentle tones and feel-good textures.

Tactile timber

The innate charm of this home was beautiful bones, with exposed rafters and VJ walls in the bedroom. In its natural state though, the timber darkened the room, so Haymes Paint Minimalist 2 was used to soften the walls and ceiling and brightened the space. To introduce lighter timber tones, the homeowner cut stumps from a felled tree on the property to create casual bedside stools. Neutral layers

It’s hard to beat the relaxed look and feel of linen. Here the Nimes quilt cover set in Natural Linen, drapes effortlessly and adds a slightly rustic aesthetic teamed with a Somers throw in white, all from Linen House and a Forni cushion from Oz Design Furniture.

“The trick to making an all neutral look work is to layer textures and mix crisp whites with warmer creams for subtle contrast. Think crumpled linen, tassels, embroidered details and fringing for the ultimate luxurious layered look” – Fiona Michelon, Home Beautiful Style Editor

A touch of contrast

It’s important to ground a light scheme with strong foundations. “A darker-toned carpet in a bedroom, such as Carpet Court’s Hawksview in Tuscan Olive, provides a great contrast to a light neutral palette – especially if the space has lots of available natural light,” explains Rachel Daniel, Carpet Court general merchandise manager. To add punch to the dreamy scheme, a black Fanco Eco Silent Ceiling Fan from Fans Online and a pair of Create Pendants from Beacon Lighting draw the eye.
