As we become more educated about the products we’re using — whether it’s the materials our toothbrushes are made from or the ingredients in our cleaning sprays — we try to become more conscious as consumers.

Bathroom brands are beginning to ride the sustainable wave with us, releasing ethical collections with natural ingredients or biodegradable properties.

To help you get started on your sustainable journey, we’ve rounded up the simple swaps and easiest ways to transform your bathroom into a beautiful sanctuary.

1. Elevate your beauty cabinet

Skincare and beauty products might look nice in a bathroom ‘shelfie’, but do you know what’s inside those pretty little bottles? Some products can be made of virgin plastic bottles or include toxic ingredients that are harmful to the environment and waterways (parabens, for instance, have been found in the tissues of marine animals).

You don’t need to ditch your self-care routine to aim to be more sustainable, as there’s a rising tide of brands changing the beauty game. Before you shop, research the brand and check the product list. Kester Black, for instance, is a carbon neutral, vegan, and B Corporation certified beauty label using natural and naturally derived ingredients in its minimal skincare range.

2. Upgrade your cleaning routine

Keeping bathroom surfaces clean while making more sustainable choices might seem like a challenge. But Pine O Cleen Disinfectant Multipurpose Wipes recently changed to a biodegradable wipe made from plant-based fibres.

This means that each wipe will now biodegrade**. Plus, the wipes kill 99.9% of germs/bacteria* and virues^, making them an easy way to clean in the bathroom and around the home.

3. Swap plastic bottles for soap bars

In a small shower, large shampoo and conditioner bottles, body wash bottles and face cleansers can quickly stack up (on top of each other!). To save space and reduce your impact on the planet, use less plastic by swapping bottles for soap bars.

Studio Tutti creates design-savvy, all-natural soap which is manufactured, moulded, cut, and packaged by hand. For a shower that’s equal parts stylish and sustainable, these artisanal soap bars are our pick.

4. Embrace bamboo brushes

When it comes to brushing your teeth or brushing your hair, it’s time to ditch plastic for good. According to research, over 30 million plastic toothbrushes are thrown away every year in Australia, while plastic hairbrushes — even if we hold on to them for longer — can take hundreds of years to break down in landfill.

Bamboo toothbrushes and hairbrushes are a strong and biodegradable alternative to plastic, and as bamboo is a fast-growing grass, it self-regenerates from its own root system. Plus, the wood’s natural properties have a neutral charge (compared to plastic which generates static electricity), leaving your hair soft and smooth.
