“Mirror, mirror on the wall…. not too big and not too small”

Choosing a bathroom mirror can be tricky and there are many factors to ponder. Not only size, but style, shape and the material it’s made of all weigh in on your decision-making.

It is important to consider your priorities in this regard and work within the decorating scheme for the whole bathroom. A contemporary space calls for a sleek finish with perhaps a larger format, or custom fitted expanse of mirror. A tiny bathroom can benefit from an oversized mirror to extend the space visually.

Here are some examples of how to make different options work in your bathroom.

Style rules but make it functional

This glossy black mirror makes a statement as part of a monochrome palette here but it’s the extra large size is critical to its overall success. Bigger than the vanity itself, it doesn’t overwhelm the space here due to the help of the solid black floor tiling serving as an anchor. All-white walls and window treatment are reflected in the mirror without clutter and the glossy painted rattan chair in a similar scale balances the room.

Double the value by increasing the size

This all-white contemporary space benefits from textured dividing screens so an unfussy treatment of the mirror is all that’s needed. Custom cut to the width of the vanity, the mirror covers the entire wall and runs all the way to the ceiling for maximum reflection of the natural light and space.

Design and detail count

Whereas one large mirror here may have been too contemporary in style for the space, twin mirrors hung close to one another act as one larger piece. A calm, elegant interior design is effected in the soft powder blue wall colour (Wash & Wear Barrier Technology in ‘Roland’ from Dulux), together with classically styled finishes of marble vanity and chrome tapware. The beveled frame edge on the mirrors adds a clever design detail without the introduction of another texture.

Form follows function

This vanity mirror has been custom designed to fit wall-to-wall in the basin recess. Divided into 3 cupboards, an architectural moulding has been added in keeping with the shaker-style cabinetry below.

Collected pieces

This ensuite features a collection of vintage and antique fixtures delicate in style and with the beautiful patina of age. A simple round mirror above the wall-mounted basin allows the antiques to take centre stage and keeps things in the right proportion. Painting the mirror out the to same colour as the wall creates a gentle result visually.

Texture and travels

Texture is key in this eclectic bathroom with the beaten metal of these decorative mirrors matching that of the gorgeous storage boxes on the shelves beneath. The small size of these sweet shapes may necessitate a larger wall mirror elsewhere in the bathroom, however keeping to a silver metallic finish for these and the tapware ties it all together.
