There’s nothing nicer than snipping your own herbs from your own kitchen garden. The good thing about herbs is that they’re super-easy to grow and you don’t need a lot of space. A sunny window is all you need to get started.

Start with easy herbs like coriander, chives, mint and thyme. According to Bunnings’ Greenlife buyer Sharyn Petrzela, herbs like rosemary, basil and oregano can get a little bigger and you may need to plant them in a bigger pot.

Use premium potting mix to plant the seedlings in a self-watering pot – or place a saucer underneath. The ideal pot size is between 150mm and 200mm.

Keep your plants healthy with these tips:

  • Turn your plants around occasionally so they get even growth.
  • Take your herb plants outside from time to time for some direct sunlight.
  • Don’t over water your herbs, and ensure they have good drainage.
  • Give your plants a boost with liquid fertilizer once a fortnight.
  • Trim leaves regularly for dense growth.

Here is our round-up of the best planters to start your indoor herb garden.
