The unveiling of a Three Birds renovation is always big news – even more so when you’re talking kitchens and living rooms. After getting a first taste of their latest project, we were primed for a game-changing kitchen. House 11 certainly delivers. Designed for a young family with three school-aged kids, the home is a playful take on classic Hamptons style. In the kitchen, built by Carrera By Design, that means colour.
The shaker-style cabinetry profiles, arched rangehood and classic butler’s sink (from Reece) are all touchstones of the traditional East Coast American look but, never one to play by the rules, creative director and co-founder Bonnie Hindmarsh shook up the look with a refreshing splash of Dulux Angora Blue on the island.
The result is Aimee, the owner’s, favourite feature in the house. Not only does she love the colour, she adores how the Caesarstone benchtops in Empira White, hover over furniture-like legs so the family’s three kids can sit around the island as the adults cook.
Overhead, Constance pendant lights from Beacon Lighting add just the right amount of drama. “They’re ribbed glass so they sit quietly in the space, says Bonnie, Three Birds Renovations co-founder and creative director. “I didn’t want something that would close it off.”
Just off the kitchen, the dining table tucks into a small but effective nook. The space-saving star here is the built-in banquette seating, upholstered with a custom stripe from Materialised.
“You can push the table right up to the bench and it doesn’t take up much room,” Bonnie says. The Capiz pendant, oval dining table and Vineyard chairs (all Freedom) are all aligned perfectly with the windows to create, in Bonnie’s words, “a real moment.”
The dining area flows through to the casual lounge area. Here, the crisp, white Bronte lounge and ottoman from Lounge Lovers (the covers are removable for cleaning) and Slim Aarons Snorkelling In Malta print set a cool, calm mood.
Oak Elegance engineered timber flooring in Coastal Oak from Godfrey Hirst and Kaya Diamond rug from Early Settler anchor the space with texture and natural tones and rattan armchairs are a breath of fresh air. Try the Martini chair in rattan white wash from Oz Design.
Tune in next week for when the tour of this incredible home heads upstairs.
