Teams dialled up the design in this week’s episode of House Rules, with only one renovation remaining after this one to do well and impress the judges.
With a colour scheme of “oak and aqua” directed by Shayn & Carly’s House Rules, teams served up several different shades of aqua – from pale sea glass in the lounge room to a rich, bold teal in the dining room.
Shayn & Carly’s House Rules:
1. Make small feel big
2. Hide function with form
3. Let there be light
4. Use oak and aqua
5. Give the girls a mermaid’s bathroom
Mikaela & Eliza: Kitchen & Harper’s room
The surfer sisters stepped up the design this week in the kitchen and whilst there were parts that the judges liked, they couldn’t agree on what worked and what didn’t.
In Harper’s room the loft bed hit the right note with the secret space beneath but the lack of design elsewhere in the room really only impressed LLB.
Mikaela & Eliza received a total score of 21/30 for their zone.
Tim & Mat: Entry, hallway and ensuite
Tim & Mat finished equal top of the leaderboard after creating a sleek, modern, light-filled entryway and a hallway that won Wendy’s heart. Jamie loved it too, describing it as, “Hands down the best hallway treatment I have seen in House Rules.”
In the ensuite, the aqua herringbone feature tiles in the shower and wrapping around the wall in the recess won the judges over. They scored a total of 24/30 included a 9 from both Wendy and Jamie. LLB thought they tried too hard.
Mikaela & Eliza scored a total of 24/30 from the judges.
Pete & Courtney: Dining room and Imogen’s bedroom
In Imogen’s room Jamie and Wendy loved the fun and sparkle. “There’s just so much to love!” Wendy exclaimed. LLB, “Couldn’t get his head around it,” however.
In the dining room the judges criticised the built-in bed-turned-bench-seat for it’s lack of space efficiency but loved the sophisticated colour scheme.
Pete & Courtney scored 20/30 from the judges, leaving them on the bottom of the leaderboard.
Katie & Alex: Master bedroom and laundry
With their own home the last to be renovated, for Katie & Alex this was their last chance to score points on the leaderboard so they were determined to kick it out of the park.
In the laundry, the bold textured wallpaper and clever layout of the space was welcomed by the judges. Wendy was impressed with the open shelving in the laundry, which answered the House Rules of making the space feel bigger.
The master bedroom wowed the judges with its stunning use of teal, layered textures, brass detailing and functional storage.
Katie & Alex earned a total score of 24/30, returning them on top of the leaderboard this week.
Lisa & Andy: Lounge room & bathroom
Wendy was nervous about the mermaid rule for the bathroom but pleased with the result, which featured custom marble fish-scale tiles behind the bathtub and brass consistently in tapware and touches around the room. Jamie was impressed both with the efficiency and longevity of the design saying, “They have future-proofed the design and not wasted a dollar in doing it.”
Lounge room
Lisa & Andy’s colour choice finally hit the aqua and oak rule and the lighting concept in the ceiling worked well.
In total Lisa & Andy scored a total of 22/30 from the judges.
