The Home Beautiful Style in 60 Seconds series begins with the celebrated armchair. Every home should have at least one to serve the needs for comfort, character and style in any room – be it a bedroom, living room, nursery or alfresco space. “One’s armchair is a sacred space,” says HB stylist Lucy Gough, who suggests revamping armchair accessories as an easy win to refresh your decor with new colours and patterns whenever the mood strikes. “If you have an armchair long enough it takes the shape of your body,” says Lucy. “It’s nice to change the throw and cushions with the seasons.”

“It’s a place that feels like a hug at the end of the day.”

While a beloved armchair can travel with you through life from house to house, what makes it feel like home is the ability to reinvent it myriad times to not only chart your personal style odyssey, but to add comfort, ring in the seasons and ensure you’ll always have a place to escape to at home. Cosy, chic and oh-so-inviting — here’s how to style your armchair like a pro.

How to style your armchair

1. Find the perfect spot
Place your armchair just outside the main thoroughfare of your living area — somewhere cosy and quiet, ideal for reading or relaxing.

2. Drape a seasonal throw
Choose a throw that suits the season and drape it over one arm. You can fold it neatly or let it cascade from the back to the front, showing off any texture or fringing.

3. Add a plush cushion
Finish with a comfy cushion in a coordinating or contrasting colour. Mix patterns and shapes if you like — a rectangular lumbar cushion works especially well.
