Winter is almost here but that doesn’t mean you have to change your lifestyle.
If you enjoy entertaining outdoors, Adbri Masonry brand ambassador and landscape expert Jason Hodges says it’s still possible to spend time in your garden during the cooler months.
“A little preparation and a few smart purchases can winter-proof your backyard by transforming it from an unused winter space into a cosy feature area that will be a family favourite year round,” said Jason.
Here are Jason’s top tips for getting your garden winter ready:
Foundation
Before you do anything, the most important thing to consider is your foundation.
“To make the most of your yard during winter, the important thing, before we even get to heating, is laying a solid foundation,” says Jason.
This includes adequate drainage or a paved area large enough for entertaining.
Look after your lawn
Properly preparing your lawn during autumn will make all the difference when it comes to surviving the winter. Choose a slow release fertiliser and feed your lawn throughout autumn ensuring it is healthy and in good condition coming into winter. Water as needed, this will depend on the climate you live in. A simple tip for knowing when your grass needs watering is to watch for curling of the leaves or the appearance of dry spots.
Add some heat
Your winter garden isn’t complete without a source of heat. This can come in the form of an outdoor heater or a fire pit.
“The ambience a fire pit brings is worth the investment alone, providing an enjoyable feature for the garden and a natural gathering spot for socialising and entertaining. It’s a great focal point, I like to describe it as nature’s TV and people are naturally drawn to the campfire-like atmosphere,” explains Jason.
