A splash of green in your bathroom does wonders to bring life into a space that is generally finished with “hard” surfaces such as tiles, mirror and glass.
Adding a little life with an indoor plant brings a softness to the room and can purify the air against unwanted chemicals.
Choosing a plant that will thrive in the bathroom can be tricky as, whilst all plants need light for photosynthesis, some do better than others with limited light and not all plants do well in an enclosed space and with humidity generated in wet areas.
Ferns, such as Boston ferns and Maidenhair ferns are a great choice as they all thrive in a moist environment and with little or no light.
Peace lily spathiphyllum and Dieffenbachia are hardy varieties that do well in a bathroom with filtered light – their tropical origins means they are suited a moist environment.
For flowering varieties, Begonia are hardier than they look and will last for extended periods with perhaps a short visit outside now and then.
Other tips:
- Installing a ceiling hook to hang the plants will keep them off benchtops
- Wipe leaves once a month or so to prevent dust build up and keep plant looking fresh and healthy
- Watering is still required to the root base, despite the humid environment. Work on a basis of every second day in summer – less often in winter.
