LUST-HAVES
A master suite wishlist might read like the facilities of a swanky hotel: “An ensuite with a sauna, freestanding bath, walk-through shower, heated floor, his ’n’ hers dressing rooms and the best views in the house,” says interior designer Darren James. Tech heads might add home automation for sound and lighting, while a bespoke bedhead and fine linen is a given.
MUST-HAVES
Planning bedrooms is about more than just the ratio of beds to bodies. “A key thought is the future needs of a family,” says interior designer Luisa Volpato. “You might have young kids now, but later, teenagers will need their own space.” She suggests two bedroom areas, so the kids can be near you when they’re young and move into the other zone when they’re older. Storage is also a key requirement.
COMPROMISE
There’s no reason why you can’t have at least a couple of things on your lust list. “The room itself doesn’t need to be huge, as we’re mostly in there just to sleep,” says Luisa. “Ensure you at least have a small nook to sit and read or relax.” Use the extra space for storage and an ensuite. Aimee and Frank are planning an open ensuite in their new home. “It will make the space feel really luxurious, like a large hotel room,” says Aimee.
